Having a Cheap Website: Good or Bad Idea?

Can you get a cheap website built? Discover why a low-cost website is rarely a good investment — and what to do if your budget is truly limited.

Créer un site internet pas chère

The creation of a showcase site, whether made by yourself, by a freelancer, or a web agency, always starts with a good idea. But can you really have a cheap website? How to manage if we have no choice? To be precise, it is extremely easy to find someone who will create your website for a few hundred euros, or to ask a friend of a friend to do it for you — but is this really a good idea even if you have no choice? You probably have no idea what an incompetent person can cost you compared to the full price of an expert.

So, Good or Bad Idea?

The creation of a website, whether e-commerce, showcase, or anything else, involves several professions and extensive experience in the matter. Anyone can create a website — even you in less than 2 days — but that is not what counts. What counts is that it serves a purpose. Unfortunately, only 2% of web pages are visible in Google searches simply because the majority of people who create low-cost sites or create them themselves achieve no results in terms of SEO. Even if your freelancer claims otherwise and that they can index a website for less than €100!

Pie chart of website traffic on the web

That is not all, because once your site actually has a chance of being visible on Google, will it be able to convert its visitors? Simply ask yourself if you have ever made a purchase, or contacted someone, on a site from the 2000s with overlapping text and where everything is jumbled. Design is the cornerstone along with SEO for a site to truly work. This is the recurring problem of unindexable sites with truly awful design that leads nowhere. What then do the owners of these sites do? They strive to think their site can work since it is present on the internet, so they advertise, try social media, Google Ads, and much more, and end up spending thousands of euros with no income. I am talking here about income, not profit.

So is it a good idea to entrust the creation of a site to someone for a small budget? Absolutely not. Creating a good website takes at least 1 week — ask yourself if with €500 x 4, i.e. €2,000 per month not counting what the State takes (minimum 25%), then the hosting of your site (minimum €50) and many other charges, can be profitable? Absolutely not. Your site will be created and finished in less than a day and they will move on to the next client. The result: no benefit, only €500 lost for you, and probably more when you try to make your site work on such mediocre foundations. It is even possible that showing it to potential clients will discredit you. It is probably better to buy a template — you will be sure of the result and it will not cost much.

Calling on a Friend or Acquaintance

Counting on a friend or acquaintance to create your site is a very bad idea, especially if you value your friendship. Indeed, your friend does not want to spend a year doing it for you, even if they “know about it”. Even if they are a good developer, that changes nothing — you are asking them for a gift worth over €1,000 for the time they will need to invest; you cannot count on them to deliver what you need. Especially since a website is evolving. They will not always be able to help you modify your text, make necessary updates, etc. The best way, once again, is to call on a professional, knowing why you must indeed pay the price.

No Budget? Create a Cheap Site Yourself?

If you do not have the budget to entrust the creation of your site to someone else, it is still better to do it yourself. In that case you will only pay for hosting and the domain name for less than a hundred euros per year. By spending a few weeks on it, even if you know nothing about it, it will be much more effective than calling on butchers. To be completely honest, you will have very little chance of managing to earn money with a website if you create it yourself without devoting at least an entire year full-time to it. Many subtleties revolve around a website and it is not simply a matter of creating a visual on Wix and thinking you are going to conquer the web — unfortunately, that is impossible. And it would be well-known if it were that simple.

Whatever the case, if you therefore want to create a website yourself, in that case look towards a CMS like WordPress or . Otherwise, save up to have a minimum budget of over €1,000 — that is the minimum for the price of a website. Need help creating your future site? Contact us!
