Kinsta Hosting Review: The Best WordPress Hosting?

Kinsta is a premium managed WordPress hosting provider built on Google Cloud. Discover why it stands out from budget hosts, what makes it so fast, and whether it is worth the price.

What is the point of telling you the advantages of a good hosting provider without an introduction to put things in context?

Your success as an online business depends primarily on your choice of hosting provider.
The choice of hosting provider must not be neglected at all — it largely determines your site speed since all requests depend on your hosting. That said, your site speed will play a very important role in converting your visitors and also plays a role in improving your natural SEO and therefore your position in Google search results.

This is what makes the difference between a WooCommerce site that handles dozens of visitors at the same time and makes you money, and a poor hosting provider that makes your site far too slow, crashes, and only makes a few sales per month, with customers who never come back.

  • 80% of internet users never return to a slow e-commerce site.
  • , a one-second delay in mobile page loading times can impact conversion rates by up to 20%.

Commercial strategies of hosting providers

Classic hosting providers (your current hosting provider is likely one of them) generally advertise a very very reduced price on their plans and put in small print that next month you will pay triple, and a bit more the following year when you have to pay for your domain name. However, one might say that triple a very low price is not too bad. But that is only a tiny part of their strategy. You will end up paying for a multitude of additional things you are not told about upfront. Because yes, a hosting provider at €0.99/month then €2.99/month cannot be profitable for them. The maths quickly gets complex, but I will simplify. A system administrator alone costs around €80,000 per year (including social contributions — what the company pays).

The calculation is simple:
80,000 / 12 = 6,667
So that is €6,667/month to pay.
And 6,667 / 2.99 = 2,230

Which means that for a hosting company, every batch of 2,200 customers at €2.99 per month allows them to hire one system administrator. But if you have a technical problem with your hosting provider — or how can they solve problems that arise? How can a single person handle all of this? They cannot. And obviously this does not include all the other employees, premises, infrastructure costs, marketing, and so on (a lot more).

What does this mean for you?

To start with, you will end up with shared hosting so they can limit their costs — meaning multiple sites will be on one single server. Like being hundreds of people in a 15m² space — horrible, right? If a site has a traffic spike, everyone pays the price, whether in terms of loading speed or your website potentially becoming completely inaccessible for a period of time (or hosting providers doing updates that make modifying your site impossible for the whole day).

If you are the one consuming a lot of bandwidth, the hosting will further limit your performance when you need it — because you cannot drive everyone away. You will then become too disappointed and leave. Convenient — they will be glad and wait for a new customer who consumes less, like a site that generates no traffic (welcome, newcomers).

Moreover, if they decide to add 10 more sites to increase their margins, they will. Nothing tells you that in the future — as has already happened in hundreds of testimonials — your site will not see its speed drastically reduced due to new arrivals, even though performance was already catastrophic.

If you take the time to read the policy and all the small print, you will also learn that there is no unlimited bandwidth or disk space — simply because it is not possible. Or that they have fabulous 24/7 support, when we have clearly seen that is impossible.

How do hosting providers make money?

As briefly mentioned above, they try to save with shared servers and by making a lot of money with upsells and hidden fees: website migrations, SSL certificates, domain registrations, WHOIS privacy, bogus SEO help (that one is the worst — it could even have the opposite effect and de-rank your site), a CDN and many other things.

And also, obviously, to get you onto a more expensive plan. Because yes, as you have seen, your site’s loading performance is largely tied to your success. So you need a site with more performance to succeed (you: “What if I moved to a non-shared server — that would be great!”). Beyond this parameter, it is also possible that your site no longer works or can no longer be modified due to limits imposed on your site. You will therefore naturally gravitate towards a more expensive plan. This is the “bait and switch” commercial strategy — you end up with a plan almost as expensive as a good hosting provider’s. And your more expensive plan will only offer slightly improved performance while telling you the problem is you and your site. You already have your site with them, your hosting and your domain name — so you are not going to switch, especially since migration seems expensive. Their strategy paid off: they hooked you with a super attractive offer and now you are paying a lot because you started with them — all for still very low performance.

Choosing your WordPress hosting

— and I will explain why. If you have been looking for a “hack” to succeed online, if there is one, it is this hosting provider.

Kinsta focuses on managed hosting for WordPress only.

Note: in general, hosting providers that offer “WordPress” plans only handle the integration of setup tools for WordPress, and not the performance or interface friendliness (even if they add WordPress setup, their systems already automatically include all possible modifications for any needs and are therefore not specifically adapted to WordPress).

1. The ease that Kinsta offers

Kinsta obviously provides tools to create your WordPress site very quickly and very easily. I will spare you the details of how to click 2 buttons to get a WordPress site with Kinsta. They also offer the DevKinsta tool — a tool for developing your site locally for free. If you are interested, you can also consult our article on installing WordPress locally.

Have no skills? At Kinsta, everything is incredibly simple. Have skills? You will save phenomenal time (and if needed you also have SSH, Git and WP-CLI access).

A single dashboard:

The control panel gives you exactly what you need, and each setting corresponds to your WordPress needs. So you will not need a full control panel — since in any case you can only use it for WordPress.
Goodbye cPanel and its billions of links to modify your site to correspond to any solution.

Need anything? “A single click”

Everything is fully automated — if you need something, just click a button. Nothing more, nothing less.

Kinsta also offers setting up a staging environment in a few clicks. This allows you to create a copy of your site (development environment) to test things at your leisure without bothering your visitors.

2. Performance — the fastest managed WordPress hosting on the market

The turning point. I decided, after several different hosting providers and hours of research, to propose to one of my clients (very particular about performance) to move to Kinsta. After seeing the difference with my own eyes in the immediate impact on loading times — both on the site and in the WordPress admin — I became jealous. It did not take me long before moving to Kinsta myself and migrating all my other clients there.

Kinsta is simply the fastest WordPress hosting in the world (there has to be a best).
And I do not mince my words — their competitors like Pressable, Flywheel, WP Engine and WordPress.com are not far behind, but is a phenomenon (ironically, WordPress.com will not offer you the same performance levels or other benefits). It is no coincidence that General Electric, Ubisoft, TripAdvisor and other large companies are their clients.

Kinsta uses the Google Cloud platform — its servers are therefore extremely fast and redundancy is built-in. Moreover, they use C2 compute-optimised machines (Google’s fastest servers) and the top-tier Google Cloud Platform network.
Kinsta uses LXD-managed hosts and LXC software containers orchestrated for each site. This means every WordPress site is hosted in its own isolated container, which has all the software resources necessary for its operation (Linux, Nginx, PHP, MySQL).

But that is not all — they use directly integrated speed optimisation techniques:

  • A cache directly on the server side
  • An NGINX server with Expires Headers
  • GZIP compression
  • A premium DNS (Amazon Route)
  • Data centres all over the world (cheap hosting providers generally have locations far from users to limit costs — very bad for performance)
  • A CDN, allowing you to use any nearest data centre to further increase performance
  • Minification of CSS & JS code

Moreover, Kinsta automatically scales your CPU and RAM instead of imposing arbitrary limits — meaning if your project needs more power or you have a large traffic spike, your website will be able to handle the traffic (without crashing). It is important to separate out the various tricks that can be used to optimise a WordPress site’s speed that “absorb load”, such as image optimisation. These are essential. But you must not forget that if you have multiple visitors at a given moment T, it is likely that your optimisations will not be of much use with a poor hosting provider due to their limited traffic adaptation capacity. This means your loading time will plummet and your load-absorbing optimisations will be of little use.

Moreover, even if a monthly visitor limit is specified on your Kinsta plan, they will not allow themselves to prevent your site from growing. This means that if you exceed the monthly visit threshold, it will automatically be charged on the next invoice instead of crashing your site — unlike many other hosting providers.

Many hosting providers simply stop your site, then send you an email asking for extra money (and a lot of it) to address the problems — which rarely actually resolves the issue.

Kinsta always offers the latest PHP version several months in advance — very important for increasing performance. They also offer monitoring tools such as Kinsta APM and New Relic to analyse your performance and its issues so you can improve and optimise your site’s loading. They also have real-world use cases regarding their tools: or (something good competing hosting providers like Flywheel, Pressable, etc. do not offer).
Moreover, sites hosted on Kinsta have 100% uptime — meaning your site will never be unavailable. (Tests have always calculated 100% uptime, but to be safe we can say 99.99%).

You will easily be able to divide your site’s full loading time by 4 after migration alone. Even already-optimised sites with 1.2s loading times see their time halved at minimum.

All of this for any plan, without hidden fees. There is no “secret boost”, no strange pricing system that forces you to pay for features you do (or do not) need.
They do have a few additional parameters if needed. They are not mentioned in this article as they are very specific and generally reserved for large sites.

Know that reducing loading time from 3.5 to 2.5 seconds increases conversions by 27%. It also improves your natural SEO. Unfortunately, I regularly notice on my new clients’ sites that a task I could complete in 10 minutes on my site would take much longer on theirs due to backoffice slowness. Imagine the time they lose and how little sense this makes. Just because your current hosting costs less does not mean it is not costing you more.

Recently, Kinsta integrated a new standard called Early Hints, which allows an average 20% speed increase. Personally, I activated this (by pressing a button). It caused no issues and boosted the speed of my blog articles by approximately 25%, reducing the total loading time of my blog pages to under one second and a Speed Index below 500ms (indicating how quickly page content is available).

3. Security

Security is very important for your brand identity and revenue. You would very likely need to be made aware of security — because it is unfortunately far too overlooked, and the day there is a problem you will have only your tears left. I could tell you that the average number of days a site is attacked is once per week, with around thirty attacks in five minutes — but does that mean anything to you? And now what if I told you that 43% of cyberattacks target small businesses? You can find many statistics with a search engine, each more alarming than the last. Know in any case that a site is never 100% secure — and if someone tells you otherwise, run. You are never safe from the day your site gets hacked, and believe me, it is probably worse than you think.

That is why Kinsta is once again a good choice, as it has a very powerful security system. They do not guarantee 100% that your site will be secure — which is normal — but they do guarantee 100% that your site will be fixed following an attack:

“We have hardware firewalls, active and passive security and other advanced features to prevent access to your data. But if your site is compromised, we will repair it for free.”

A few additional details:

  • An SSL certificate that guarantees that everything your visitors do on your site is encrypted.
  • Complete and automatic daily backups by default; you can even make your own on-demand backups whenever you want. A feature that SHOULD be included by default in every service — but is not the case *coughs* OVH *coughs*.
  • XML-RPC brute force attack blocking
  • Complete isolation and latest security updates
  • PHP version of your WordPress site’s HTTP headers is automatically removed
  • IP address protection (immediately blocks a spammer attacking your site)
  • Protection against DDoS attacks (they increased by nearly 50% in 2019)
  • Your resources are 100% private and not shared with anyone else, not even between your own sites.
  • […]

4. Once again the best support on the market.

Kinsta has an unmatched support team, fully trained in WordPress and hosting (very, very well trained). If you do not yet believe in superheroes, you might be surprised!
• I have experienced an average response time of one minute for each request, 24/7.
• And a 100% resolution rate (as long as you do not ask them to entirely code your site for you).

No need to list a whole bunch of things — I think that says it all. Here is an example:

(Kinsta has French-speaking support)

Which results in a nice email from Google a few days later:

5. Any disadvantages?

1. The price

Does it sound too good to be true? No, it is just expensive.

It is the Holy Grail of WordPress hosting at $35 per month (if you pay annually, you get 2 months free) for its 1st subscription, which includes everything mentioned.
Other plans are only available to have multiple sites, therefore more average visits, disk space and PHP workers — such as for medium-sized e-commerce sites.

If you compare their prices to a cheap hosting provider at ~€50/year, knowing that Kinsta costs ~€350/year, you get a price difference of 700%.

And what is the main criterion for choosing a product? The price. However, with Kinsta you know why you are paying that price. And in reality, it is not even a problem — and I will explain why.

Imagine you are someone with little knowledge in this area. You will pay countless developers upfront to set up essential tools. For example, setting up automatic backups costs a service fee of ~€100, in addition to having to pay for the backup service. Then you will have to pay for “mini” services to ensure a minimum quality for your site every time a problem arises. Even at the minimum budget of a developer on codeur.com, you will pay €30/service. These “small problems” will number at least a dozen per year. In our example we are already at +€400 spent/year, whereas Kinsta’s support would have handled everything in a few minutes and also saved your precious time in finding service providers. And let us be honest — at a budget of €30, you might end up with developers who do poor work.

If you are a developer, you know very well that when counting your daily rate (I think we can agree on a minimum of one day’s work) and the main paid external services, you will save money without a doubt.

You see where I am going? Just with Kinsta’s support, you can save money not counting all the other benefits. So do not worry — if you care about your money, you have found the solution.

These calculations are based only on you taking a minimum of care with your site. Thanks to the support and quality service, you will not need a technical maintenance service unless your needs are extreme. If your budget is too tight, you can also forgo paid performance plugins as well as providers to optimise your site and a multitude of other things. Obviously, this does not take into account Kinsta’s even more valuable advantages that will in reality earn you much more money.

On the other hand, if you already have a frequently visited, large-scale site, you can directly increase your revenue — without even taking into account the many advantages offered by Kinsta. For example, UNICEF experienced an 850% increase in earnings compared to their previous hosting when making this change. Source:

2. Kinsta does not offer domain sales or professional email management

You will not be able to buy a domain from Kinsta, or get one for free. This confirms once more that Kinsta is not trying to sell you a bunch of extras to make more money. You pay for a service, and it is the best — but you handle the domain yourself. Same for your professional email (e.g.: contact@yoursite.com).

It is slightly inconvenient for the domain name — a matter of habit. If you are lost, support will help you.

Believe me — when it comes to your professional mailbox, this will greatly serve you. All hosting providers, registrars and email providers will offer an “unusable” service.
Let me explain: the mailbox will sometimes work “normally”, but will often be slow or buggy. But the biggest problem will be at a practical level.
You will have to log into a dedicated site (e.g.: Roundcube) to access your mailbox — generally with no possibility of accessing it on a smartphone, and all without any pop-up to notify you of a new email.

After 2 weeks, between forgetting to log in and always having to be at your computer and on the lookout, practicality will win out. You will undeniably end up using Gmail with your personal email for professional matters. You can still add all sorts of settings to your professional email service to have emails automatically redirected to your personal Gmail inbox, and configure it so that when you send an email from your personal address it is then sent via your professional email service. This way you will have the practical side, notifications, and all automatically. Let us say you are resourceful and manage to set up this process. You can imagine that this will further slow down the sending and receiving of emails, which was frankly already slow. Once again, cheap hosting providers will have got the better of you.

Kinsta lets you choose any third-party messaging service, but strongly suggests Google Workspace (formerly GSuite). Google Workspace is Google’s professional email service that uses the same interface as Gmail. This means you will have EXACTLY the same as your current personal mailbox. When you log into Gmail, you can choose your contact@mysite.com account just like any other personal Gmail account. It is that simple — you will completely forget it is a professional email service and feel right at home. If you choose Google Workspace, you just need to click 1 button for Kinsta to link Google Workspace to your site (they created an automatic tool for Google Workspace integration with Kinsta).

If you are using Gmail for your professional emails via your personal Gmail through some makeshift service when Gmail offers a directly integrated professional service, you should probably be asking yourself some questions.

Summary of Kinsta WordPress hosting

No matter how hard I think, I cannot see how could not be the solution you have been waiting for. Even if you did not think you had the budget for a “premium” hosting provider, for me it is indisputable that this is the solution to succeed. If you really do not have the budget, I cannot advise another hosting provider — it would make no sense as I have tried to demonstrate. If you truly have absolutely no budget at all, you could for example consider moving to Kinsta and temporarily abandoning the and performance plugins, which cost ~€75/year in total (they integrate perfectly with Kinsta). This could be a good compromise.

It is for all these reasons that for me today, having a WordPress site is synonymous with being hosted on Kinsta.

Kinsta offers free migration from your current hosting provider, with a 30-day money-back guarantee. So why not form your own opinion?

If you are wondering why people rave about Kinsta and why there are not really any negative points, I invite you to read this message from Katalin Juhasz, Sales Development Manager at Kinsta:

Our mission at Kinsta is to provide high-quality managed WordPress hosting with the best support and speed in the industry.
For businesses that rely on their website to make money, hosting should be considered an investment rather than an additional expense. There are many hosting providers from which people can choose, but we strive daily to make choosing Kinsta an obvious decision.

For the record, Kinsta was actually created because they did not appreciate the current market and were unable to offer their clients a stable and reliable hosting provider.
