Hiring a professional for website creation is what everyone recommends, and for very good reasons. The professions of developer, UI/UX designer, and SEO specialist are the 3 skills you need to master — or creating your site yourself is not necessarily a good idea.
1. A Website That Works
Creating a website in itself is very simple, whether on Wix or even WordPress — a single day can be enough. Granted, creating a site from a certain perspective is easy and quick, but what they do not tell you is that your site subsequently will not work. Because yes, you are not a designer, you do not master user experience or copywriting either, and you know nothing about SEO — natural search engine optimisation to be visible on Google. Creating a website that works — one that retains visitors through its design, converts, and is visible online — requires a great deal of experience in many fields. So doing it yourself without coming from any of the mentioned professions is inevitably a bad idea. These professions exist for a reason. Your website is what should reflect your business; do not destroy your brand identity. A patched-together site using a template that therefore fails to reflect the company is very damaging. It does not allow you to stand out from the competition, and above all a patched-together site shows. And because it shows, your website will never work — and that is without even counting the elements mentioned above that will not work either.
2. A Website That Ranks on Google (SEO)
Asking to create a professional website with a professional means they will build it correctly. That is to say, unlike a beginner, during site development they will ensure the site is understood and optimised for Google. Your site will therefore have the chance of being visible in the top 10 search results among millions of other sites. And that… is something that must be learned.
3. Saving and Making Money (and Time)
It is undeniable that calling on a professional from the outset to design your site and structure it correctly from an SEO perspective is very cost-effective.
As for design, the first impression is the most important, and if you start by destroying your brand identity on the web before it has even been created, you will lose all credibility and it will be difficult to start again on the right foot.
As for SEO, you will end up calling on a professional anyway. And if you have already created hundreds of articles on a poor structure, you will need to start from scratch.
If you think a professional is expensive, you would be surprised to find how much more you could lose by going it alone. Not only will you lose money, but on top of that your site still will not work in the end.
Here are some reasons why and how you will lose your money:
- Digital marketing / advertising even though the site will not convert.
- Hosting, domain name and other costs when the site generates no revenue.
- Happy to have a site, you shared it with everyone when the site looked makeshift. It is too late — most people will no longer trust you.
- It is also possible that some affiliate programmes are too strict if your site does not appeal to them.
- And a multitude of other things besides.
Nor is it about calling on a freelancer or agency mid-project and giving them a specific task when nothing is working. Otherwise you will create a monster.
On top of all this, you will waste time when everything surrounding a site will already take up enough of your time. Moreover, your time is money. If you spend 1 year doing something that a professional would have done in just a few days, it cannot be profitable. It is better to take on work and pay a professional, rather than spending 2 years creating your site full-time only to achieve an average result.
There are an enormous number of technical aspects hidden behind the creation of a working website.
4. Making Your Business Take Off
A professional to create your website will inevitably make your business take off — at least, that is what I observe every time I create a website without neglecting any aspect, whether for SEO or design. The problem is that it is difficult to find the right person. People often say that a website did not have the desired effect when it should have been even stronger than you had hoped. That is why once again it is important to find the right professional who will make your business, your idea, or whatever it may be, take off.
Here is a list, though non-exhaustive, for finding a good agency or a good freelancer:
- Their website is their shop window; if you have doubts about their abilities by looking at their site, know that they did the best they could on their own — so imagine the result on yours. If their site does not look modern to you, run far away.
- Was your freelancer or agency found through search engines? If not, it is very likely they know nothing about SEO. You can ask them for a keyword to search on Google for which they rank; if they give you the name of their site as the keyword, they are not good at SEO.
- Site speed is a good indicator of whether their experience is “deep”. Simply run a test on tools.pingdom.com with the URL of their homepage. If the homepage takes more than 3 seconds on Pingdom, you can move on. (By the way, site speed is one of the hidden facets of having a working website).
5. Being the Owner of Your Site
When you call on a professional, I would be surprised if they created your site on Wix, E-monsite, Sitew, or the like. The advantage, therefore, is that your site belongs to you rather than to the platform. You also have no restrictions across all other applications, such as your choice of hosting provider. This prevents you from losing your site if you stop paying (the risk can arise quickly), from being locked into an expensive ecosystem that will cost more after a few years than having your site created directly by a professional. It also avoids having to pay additional packages for “security”, being able to run Google advertising where you have to pay a premium subscription, etc.
